Abena Achiaa Boakye

Faculty Biography

Dr Boakye is a consultant food scientist and university lecturer with expertise in Compositional studies that exploit the nutrition and health benefits of food commodities, Food product development, Sensory Evaluation, Post-harvest technologies, and Process Modification and Standardization.Dr Boakye has good exposure to international collaborative interventions on food and nutrition security for Africa. She was the consultant food scientist for the Ghanaian multi-disciplinary team that investigated Fried Sweetpotato Product Profile for West Africa. She is currently a fellow of the Food Systems Research Network for Africa (FSNet-Africa) and the Project lead of an international team exploring interdisciplinary approaches to underutilised species as vehicles for sustainable nutrition and food security in climate-vulnerable and malnourished communities in Ghana. Dr Boakye is also a facilitator for industry-tailored workshops and farmer training on climate-smart-nutrition-sensitive agriculture. She is an active member of several professional bodies. These include the Ghana Science Association (current branch treasurer); the Women in Science Technology Engineering and Mathematics, Ghana (WISTEMGH); the Organisation of Women in Science for Developing Countries (OWSD); the International Society for Tropical Roots and Tuber Crops (ISTRC) and the DANIDA Alumni Network.Outside academia, Dr Boakye channels her efforts into community engagement and mentoring activities that “Demystify Science and make STEM friendly” to the youth. She is the Project lead for the annual 'Science and Technology Seminar Series for Girls' and is a member of the Board for the Junior Science and Math Quiz. She is also passionate about outreach activities that educate food vendors and consumers on safe food practices and postharvest management of perishable crops as part of efforts towards achieving SDG2 #zero hunger in Africa.
