Research Overview & Focus

The researcher integrates diverse methodologies— FTIR spectroscopy, pharmacognostic studies, toxicological analysis, and chemical profile evaluation— to study bioactive components of plants and evaluate their effects on disease or healing. This approach is applied across themes such as natural product bioactivities, malaria research, Ginger and Zingiberaceae studies, essential oils and antimicrobial activities, traditional and Medicinal Uses of Annonaceae, Mycobacterium research and diagnosis, Ethnobotanical and Medicinal Plants Studies, Tannin, tannase, and anticancer activities.

Faculty Biography

Dr. Silas Adjei is a Lecturer at the Department of Herbal Medicine, Faculty of Pharmacy and Pharmaceutical Sciences, KNUST. He received his Bachelor of Herbal Medicine degree from the Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology, Ghana. He obtained his MPhil and PhD degrees in Pharmacognosy at the same university. He is a Commonwealth fellow at the University of East Anglia, Norwich-UK. He is an alumnus of Prempeh College. After being a teaching assistant and a graduate assistant in the Departments of Herbal Medicine and Pharmacognosy, Faculty of Pharmacy and Pharmaceutical sciences, KNUST, he joined the Department as an Assistant lecturer in 2020.  His area of specialisation and research interest are largely on natural product analyses with special focus on isolation and characterisation of medicinal plant metabolites, efficacy studies of herbal medicinal products, standardisation and quality control of herbal products. He has some scientific publications in peer reviewed journals to his credit. He is a member of the Society for Medicinal Plants and Natural Products Research, The Royal Society of Tropical Medicine and Hygiene, Openlab Africa and American Society of Pharmacognosy.
