Faculty Biography

ProfileYaw Adu-Sarkodie is a consumate High Education Leader and Administrator with over 20 years experience at all levels of University administration. He has risen to the Academic rank of Professor, leading students, faculty and support staff in positions of Hall Master, Head of Department, Vice-Dean and Dean of the School of Medicine and Dentistry and Provost of the College of Health Sciences of one of the leading Universities in Africa, the Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology, Kumasi, Ghana.At the level of the University, he has worked on its highest policy making bodies - Executive Committee, Academic Board, Committees of Appointment and Promotions of staff, Search Committees for the appointment of Senior Staff, Quality Assurance and others. His passion for inclusivity of all, has led him to chair the University’s Policies Committee on Gender, Disability and Health and Safety. Currently he Chairs the Vice-Chancellor’s Enterprise Development Board which has the mandate of linking the University to opportunities within and outside the University to increase its internally generated funds in a bid to achieve financial sustainability. Being passionate about scholarship, he has authored over 150 journal articles in high impact peer reviewed journals and he is the Editor in Chief of the University’s Journal of Science and Technology which publishes research from the Humanities, Engineering, Art and Built Environment, Agiculture and Natural Resources, Science, Health Sciences, Law etc.In the capacity of Dean and Provost, he led Financial and Material Resource Mobilisation efforts locally and Internationally for Capital projects, Research, and Skills acquisition to support the work of the University. He is passionate about graduate student mentorship having mentored over 15 and 25 students respectively, at the Doctoral and Masters levels (local and International) and numerous at the Bachelor’s level. In research, he has been Principal Investigator/Investigator of many public health related researches with collaborators globally, bringing to the University over $10 million in research grants. He is currently working on various Typhoid related studies including a Phase IV Typhoid fever Conjugate Vaccine trial funded by the European Union and the Bill and Melinda Gates Fund at over Euro 6m, Phase II non-typhoidal vaccine trial funded by GSK Global, and a Typhoid Environmental Surveillance study also funded by the BMGF. At the International level he has worked with the WHO in various capacities, the International Vaccine Institute, the London School of Hygiene and Tropical Medicine, Boston School of Public Health, the Health Sciences Research Council of South Africa and others in Research and consultancies.As Professor in Clinical Microbiology at the College of Health Sciences, Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology, Ghana, he has over 25 years teaching experience in teaching courses in Clinical Microbiology and Reproductive Health to undergraduate and graduate students of Medicine, Dentistry, Laboratory Sciences, Nursing and Public Health.
