Faculty Biography

Dr. Anthony Afum-Adjei Awuah is a Faculty Member at the Department of Molecular Medicine, School of Medicine and Dentistry, Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology (KNUST), where he also serves as the Postgraduate Coordinator. He is the Deputy Research Group Leader of the Global Health and Infectious Disease Research Group at the Kumasi Centre for Collaborative Research in Tropical Medicine (KCCR). Additionally, he is the Lead Scientific Officer of the African Research Network for Neglected Tropical Diseases (ARNTD), an affiliate of the Africa Academy of Arts and Sciences, and a member of the Africa Coalition for Epidemic Research, Response, and Training (ALERRT). With extensive experience in clinical research, pandemic preparedness, outbreak response, and community-based studies in resource-limited settings, Dr. Afum-Adjei Awuah has been instrumental in the design, planning, and implementation of multiple outbreak response research initiatives across Ghana and Africa. His work includes leading seroprevalence studies on WHO-priority pathogens and contributing to the evidence base for public health interventions in the region. Beyond outbreak response, he is actively involved in clinical trials, including drug and vaccine studies, ensuring the rigorous implementation of research protocols in challenging environments. A former WHO/TDR Clinical Research and Development Fellow, Dr. Afum-Adjei Awuah currently serves on the steering committee of the WHO/TDR Africa Regional Training Centre, supporting capacity-building efforts for clinical research in the region. Passionate about research training and mentorship, he co-convenes the Skills for Excellence in Science Series (SEXISS), which delivers specialized training programs using advanced pedagogical approaches, problem-based learning, and group-based methodologies. Through this initiative and his role as Postgraduate Coordinator, he plays a key role in strengthening the next generation of biomedical and health researchers in Africa. Dr. Afum-Adjei Awuah’s career reflects a commitment to conducting high-quality research in the trenches of resource-limited settings while fostering collaborations that translate scientific findings into tangible public health impact. His work continues to shape the landscape of infectious disease research, particularly in the areas of pandemic preparedness and outbreak response research in Africa.
