The researcher's work focuses on advancing understanding across various domains within child development and health, including neurological disorders such as spinal muscular atrophy in Ghanaian children, immunology related to HIV/AIDS and infectious diseases, maternal/pediatric care concerning blood clotting mechanisms, early childhood education, neurodevelopmental milestones, and their impact on quality of life. The study emphasizes issues in Ghanaian children, encompassing acute and chronic health complications, immunological studies, neurological assessments, and the importance of holistic approaches to ensure comprehensive healthcare solutions.

Faculty Biography

BSc (Hum Biol), MB ChB, Dip PDM (Liverpool), Cert Paed Neurol (S/Africa), MPhil Paed Neurol (Cape Town), FWACP, FGCPDr. Charles Hammond is Consultant Paediatric Neurologist at Komfo Anokye Teaching Hospital and Senior Lecturer at the School of Medicine and Dentistry, Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology, Kumasi, Ghana. Dr Hammond obtained his medical degree from the Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology in 2002 and had his postgraduate training in Paediatrics with the West African College of Physicians where he obtained his membership in 2008 and fellowship in 2013. He had subspecialty training in Paediatric Neurology at the Red Cross War Memorial Children’s Hospital, University of Cape Town, South Africa. He holds a subspecialty certificate in Paediatric Neurology from the Colleges of Medicine of South Africa and an MPhil (Paediatric Neurology) from the University of Cape Town, South Africa. He is also an elected fellow of the Ghana College of Physicians.Dr. Hammond is current head of the Paediatric Neurology Unit at KATH. He is a member of the International League Against Epilepsy (ILAE) and serves on the ILAE Generic Drug Task Force and the Training Expansion Task Force of ILAE Africa. He is the country lead of the Paediatric Epilepsy Training (PET) course in Ghana. He also serves a member of the National Polio Expert Committee for Polio Eradication (NPEC). His research interest is in Paediatric NeuroAIDS, Neuroinfections, Epilepsy and Pain Management. Dr Hammond is a 2010 Frederick and Virginia Smith Stecker Scholar in Paediatric Neurology at the Nationwide Children’s Hospital, Columbus Ohio, and the 2017 recipient of the Bernard D’Souza Award by the Child Neurology Society.
