Research Overview & Focus
Recent research has highlighted the critical role of nature in addressing environmental challenges and promoting sustainable development. A comprehensive study integrates insights from themes such as heavy metals in agriculture, seed biochemistry, and natural elements, emphasizing their roles in mitigating pollution and enhancing food safety. Advances in bioactive compounds like chromium-based nanomaterials and their applications have bridged the gap between research and practical solutions. Furthermore, innovative approaches leveraging eco-friendly materials, such as chitosan, are being developed to enhance water quality while minimizing ecological impacts. Simultaneously, studies on fungal and bacterial biofilms underscore their potential for developing effective treatments against toxic metals. These findings collectively demonstrate how interdisciplinary efforts across fields can drive meaningful changes in environmental health, resource management, and sustainable agriculture.
Faculty Biography
Prof. Nathaniel Owusu Boadi is a full Professor at the Department of Chemistry, Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology, Ghana. He earned his Bachelor of Science (BSc. Hons) in Chemistry, Master of Science (MSc.) in Environmental Chemistry, and Doctor of Philosophy (Ph.D.) in Inorganic Chemistry degrees from the Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology.Prof. Boadi is a seasoned researcher and scholar with an impressive track record in chemistry. He previously worked as a research fellow at the University of Manchester, United Kingdom, from July 2011 to December 2013, where he was a beneficiary of the Leverhulme-Royal Society Africa Awards grant. During his tenure at the University of Manchester, he worked under the supervision of the late Prof. Paul O'Brien, FRS, CBE. His research focused on novel single-source routes to synthesizing lead chalcogenide nanoparticles and thin films.Prof. Boadi's research interests revolve around synthesizing metal-organic complexes, metal chalcogenide semiconducting nanoparticles, and thin films. He is also deeply invested in studying water quality, food contaminants, heavy metal toxicity, and persistent organic pollutants in environmental matrices.Prof. Boadi's achievements extend beyond his research interests, as he has held several notable positions. He previously served as the head of the Department of Chemistry at KNUST and the immediate past National Secretary of the Ghana Science Association. From September 2015 to August 2019, he served as the Kumasi branch president of the GSA. Furthermore, he chaired the 9th KNUST Summer School and is the current Pan Africa Chemistry Network (PACN) Ghana hub administrator.
