Faculty Biography

Prof. Chrissie Stansie Abaidoo is a Human Anatomist with over 20 years of teaching and research experience; a Stereologist, a Reproductive Scientist and an expert on Teaching Innovations. She is a counsellor and mentor for her colleagues and is committed to the mentorship of young people through the sharing of knowledge, insights and experiences gathered over the years.She possesses a deep commitment to all her staff and students and tries to provide them with opportunities for their personal development and growth.  Over the years she has been working with the leaders of different groups of students to effect leadership transformation. She is highly receptive to new ideas and believes in an “all inclusive” approach to leadership.She holds a PhD degree in Human Anatomy and Cell Biology from the University of Sheffield, in the United Kingdom. She began her career as a Lecturer in Human Anatomy and Cell Biology, at the Department of Anatomy, School of Medical Sciences (SMS) in 1996 and she is currently a Professor of Human Anatomy.Her Research and Teaching Areas are Forensic Anthropology, Osteometry, Reproductive Anatomy, Developmental Anatomy, Stereology, Curriculum & Teaching Development, Cell Culture Techniques and Applications, Immuno-histochemical and Cytochemical Methods, and Electron Microscopy. She has successfully supervised more than 200 students at the BSc, MSc, MPhil and PhD levels.  She has on her own and in collaboration with others engaged in numerous research studies that have culminated in several publicationsShe is a fellow of the West Africa College of Morphologists and a member of the Anatomical Society of Great Britain and Northern Ireland, the Anatomical Society of West Africa, the Anatomical Society of Ghana, Society for the Study of Fertility, Ghana Science Association, Women in Science and Technology and Women in Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics.She has contributed to several new approaches to teaching and assessments in Human Anatomy and Cell Biology.  These include: Computer Assisted Learning in Human Anatomy, Human Anatomy Table Conference sessions, Virtual Gross, Microscopic and Developmental Anatomy, Open- and Closed-Book Table Side quizzes and improvement in staff-student practical contact hours.In addition, she has made tremendous contributions towards curriculum development leading to the offer of new programmes such as PhD and MPhil programmes in Human Anatomy and Cell Biology, PhD and MPhil Human Anatomy and Forensic Science and MPhil in Mortuary Science and Management with the objective of building capacity for the manpower deprived Departments of Anatomy, at the  School of Medicine and Dentistry, KNUST, School of Health and Medical Sciences, UDS, School of Medical Sciences, UCC, School of Medicine, UHAS  etc.As the Consultant in charge of Private Embalming and the Administrator of the Body Donation for Medical Education and Research, she has worked assiduously to improve access to cadavers for students’ practical sessions through the creation of public awareness and interest in the bequeathal of human bodies to Medical Science and thus encouraging humans to extend their usefulness far beyond the grave.She was recognised in 2000 as the first female Head of Human Anatomy at any University in the West African Sub-region, first Female Associate Professor of Human Anatomy in Ghana (2014) and first Ghanaian Female Professor of Human Anatomy.  In addition she was recognized as the first Female Vice-Dean of the School of Medical Sciences in 2017/first female Vice-Dean of the School of Medicine and Dentistry in 2018. In 2014, she was honoured with the GHANA WOMEN OF EXCELLENCE AWARD in recognition of her outstanding contribution to tertiary education and scientific research.  She received Research & Teaching Areas: Reproductive Anatomy, Embryology, Histology, Stereology, Endocrinology, Curriculum & Teaching Development, Business & Management Innovation. the DEAN’S AWARD OF EXCELLENCE FOR THE BEST HEAD OF DEPARTMENT in 2001 and 2016 respectively. In 2015, she received the KWAME NKRUMAH UNIVERSITY OF SCIENCE AND TECHNOLOGY EXCEPTIONAL & MERITORIOUS SERVICE AWARD for her excellent and exemplary attributes demonstrated over the years and for their capacity to inspire others to similar qualities.  In 2018, she received the Distinguished Domite Award for her Commitment to Africa Hall issues and Welfare over the years.
