Research Overview & Focus

The researcher has conducted comprehensive studies synthesizing data across multiple thematic areas within Physical Sciences to assess human health impacts from both environmental and social/behavioral perspectives. Their work focuses on examining various factors such as heavy metals in the environment, municipal waste management practices, water quality issues, environmental education, aquatic ecosystems, and others, using methodologies like composite research approaches to understand how these impacts affect public health.

Faculty Biography

Dr. Albert Banunle is a multidisciplinary environmental scientist with interests in circular economy, bioresources valorization, climate-smart agriculture, sustainable waste management practices, sustainability governance, human security, and pro-environmental behaviour. Albert obtained his PhD degree in Environmental Science from the Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology under the Building Stronger Universities (BSU III) project by DANIDA with a secondment fellowship at Aarhus University in Denmark. His PhD research was on "Harnessing the bioresource potential of biowaste and aquatic invasive plants in the Owabi Catchment in the Ashanti Region, Ghana." Albert also holds an M.Sc. degree in Environmental Partnership Management with distinction from the University of Aberdeen (UK), an M.Sc. degree in Environmental Science, and a Bachelor of Science (B.Sc. Hons.) in Agriculture with a specialisation in Agricultural Economics and Farm Management from the KNUST.As a lecturer at the Department of Environmental Science of the KNUST, Albert has taught and assessed students on several courses at the undergraduate level, including (1) Agroecology, (2) Project Evaluation and Analysis, (3) Statistics for Environmental Scientists, (4) Environmental Management, (5) Climate Change Concepts: Impact and Adaptation, and (6) Biogeography. He also conducts independent and collaborative research that addresses critical and emerging environmental challenges, with several publications to his credit. Albert has previous work experience on research and development-oriented projects for international and local organizations, including the Commonwealth Secretariat, USAID, ACDI/VOCA, the Ghana Agricultural Workers Union (GAWU), the World Food Programme (WFP), the African Union (AU), and the West Africa Network for Peacebuilding (WANEP), among others.Albert is a Commonwealth Shared Scholarship alumnus of the University of Aberdeen (UK) by the UK Foreign and Commonwealth Development Office (FCDO).  While in the UK, he was awarded the Scottish Innovative Student Award (SISA III: Innovative Champion) during his time of study at the University of Aberdeen. Albert has extensive research and publication experience, and his publications have appeared in Springer and Elsevier, among other high-impact factor journals. He serves as a reviewer for a number of international peer-reviewed journals. Albert is also a full member of the Institution of Environmental Sciences (IES), the International Solid Waste Association (ISWA), and the Circular Economy Club (CEC).
