Jones Owusu Twumasi
The researcher focuses on advancing interdisciplinary studies in physical sciences, employing advanced techniques such as fiber optics, ultrasound, synthetic aperture radar (SAR), machine learning, and others. Their work encompasses detecting corrosion using photoacoustic sensors, assessing concrete strength with sensor data analysis, characterizing structures through SAR imaging, estimating structural loads using multifractal analysis, and evaluating moisture content in concrete using microwave imaging. They also integrate these methods into applications like recycling waste, sustainable construction, environmental seismology, and the health monitoring of reinforced concrete structures.
Faculty Biography
Dr. Jones Owusu Twumasi received his BSc. in Civil Engineering from Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology (KNUST), Kumasi, Ghana. He practiced as a Civil/Structural Engineer for almost four years in the areas of Structural Engineering and Irrigation Engineering before traveling to the United States to pursue further studies. Jones obtained his Master’s degree in Civil Engineering from Southern Illinois University in Carbondale, Illinois. He holds a Ph.D. from The University of Massachusetts (UMASS) Lowell in the field of Structural Engineering and Materials, specializing in the reliability-based condition assessment of concrete structures using electromagnetic imaging techniques. During his Ph.D. studies at UMASS Lowell, he had the opportunity to work as a research assistant on three different US Government-funded research projects. He has been a speaker at several International Conferences in the United States. Jones’ research interests include the reliability of civil engineering infrastructures, corrosion of reinforced concrete structures, electromagnetic characterization of construction materials, microwave/radar NDE, finite difference time domain simulation, and experimental design. He was appointed as a lecturer at KNUST in August 2020 upon completion of his Ph.D. studies.Jones is passionate about the health of critical civil infrastructure systems such as bridges and buildings and is currently working to develop a Structural Health Monitoring (SHM) Framework that will lead to a paradigm shift in the inspection and monitoring of civil infrastructure systems in Ghana. He believes that the primary mitigation measure to the frequent collapse of buildings in Ghana is a robust SHM framework. In addition to his passion for research in structural engineering, he desires to help train the next generation of structural engineers and scientists who will be well equipped to provide solutions to current and future structural engineering problems in Ghana and the world at large. Besides his professional life, he loves to play table tennis, piano, travel, and serve the Lord Jesus Christ. He is also a proud KATAKYIE (Old Boy of Opoku Ware School, Kumasi). Jones' philosophy in life is “ You are who you have consistently prophesied to become” and his favorite quote is “ for God so loved the world, that He gave His only begotten son, that whosoever believes in Him, should not perish but have everlasting life. John 3:16”
