Faculty Biography

Dr. Eugene Appiah-Effah is a Lecturer at the Department of Civil Engineering, College of Engineering, Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology (KNUST), Kumasi. He obtained a bachelors degree in Civil Engineering at KNUST in 2006. In 2009 he obtained a masters degree in Water and Environmental Sanitation from KNUST and in 2016 a PhD in Civil Engineering from the same university. His PhD research was on the use of rotary drum in composting faecal sludge from  peri-urban areas in the Ashanti Region of Ghana.The professional mission of Dr. Eugene Appiah-Effah is to contribute knowledge to development, research and capacity building in the Water, Sanitation and Hygiene (WASH) sector. His areas of interest include Faecal Sludge Management, Sanitation and Water Supply Services Delivery, Health and Hygiene interventions, Solid Waste Management, Wastewater Management and Life Cycle Cost of WASH Services among several others.Currently, Dr. Appiah-Effah is working on some innovative WASH and faecal sludge management technologies and approaches to help improve the sanitation situations in the rural and peri-urban areas. Notable among them are his current investigations into the growing usage of some chemical additives on the Ghanaian market to manage faecal sludge at the household level, faecal sludge accumulation rate and biodegradability of dry on-site toilet systems using the innovative toilet technology called Digni-loo. A further focus is on developing a low-cost latrine for rural and peri-urban communities using locally available materials and concentrated sun rays for faecal sludge stabilization.Dr. Eugene Appiah-Effah has developed a number of manuals and training materials for the WASH Sector. Key amongst them are Bio-digester construction and installation manual, Faecal Sludge Management Manual, Minimum Standards and Technical Guidelines for Household Latrine Construction, Latrine Construction Manual, Latrine Artisan Manual and Licensing Framework for Vacuum Tanker Operators.Dr Appiah-Effah has been involved in a number of research projects. He was one of the lead researchers in the WASHCost Project in 2009-2011 and Regional Learning Facilitator for the Sustainable Services at Scale (Triple S) project implemented by the Community Water and Sanitation Agency (CWSA) in 2011.  Also, he has worked as a consultant for several WASH related projects funded by UNICEF, WHO and WSUP.His job roles mainly include lecturing, conducting research, reviewing of journal articles and writing project reports, developing of concept notes, research protocols, report writing, training of research enumerators among others. Dr. Eugene Appiah-Effah has over 22 publications to his credit in peer reviewed journals, briefing notes and conference proceedings and participated at international and national scientific and professional conferences.
