Research Overview & Focus

The researcher investigates a diverse range of themes across social sciences and physical sciences, including sustainable waste management, pharmaceutical residue analysis, biofuel production, and environmental impact assessments. Their work encompasses themes such as Ghana-specific waste strategies, pharmacological risk assessment in hospital effluents, agricultural waste collection efficiency, composting techniques for agroecosystems, recycling processes, compostable concrete materials, biodegradable polymers, and the interplay between physical and chemical factors influencing health risks. These investigations collectively explore the integration of innovative research approaches to address global challenges in environmental sustainability and public health in Ghana.

Faculty Biography

Dr. Kodwo Miezah holds a BSc Degree in Chemistry, MPhil and PhD degrees in Environmental Science. He graduated from the University of Cape Coast, University of Ghana and the Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology for his undergraduate, masters and terminal degrees, respectively. He also enrolled as a sandwich student with the Danish Technical University (DTU) between 2012 and 2015 during his PhD programme, worked at the Danish National Laboratory, Riso, Roskilde, Denmark. His area of specialization is in waste management, bioprocessing of materials and bioenergy production. Additionally, he has interest working on water quality assessment, environmental pollution control, environmental quality management, remediation of waste lands, improvement of soil fertility and among others. He has worked on biofuel production from household wastes, compost production from wastes, waste characterization on nationwide scale, soil remediation, food waste process and water quality.Dr. Miezah has rich experience in the waste management industry working with a waste management giant, Zoomlion Ghana Limited as a researcher. His research work in the company spanned beyond improving the working efficiency of the company, market surveys, valorization of waste and waste stream analysis, but also on incorporation of best practices worldwide. This role in the company exposed him to several countries in the world where he had learning of these practices from companies, governmental institutions and associations.Working as a lecturer has been a good experience and has driven his natured ambitions into play. As environmentalist, his passion moves across just a specialized area, but also on several applications. This has seen him lecturing in different fields and subject areas. He has received several short trainings which he has earned certificates from them. These trainings have additionally opened his horizon to different areas of expertise. He has served on different platforms and continues to do same. He is an expert contributor and panel member of the Ghana National Plastic Action Roadmap (GNPAP) committee, UNDP member of Ghana Waste Recovery Platform and former board member of Zoompak Ghana Limited. He is serving on many committees on KNUST campus; Plastic Recycling Committee, Grounds Work Committee, Retreat Committee (CoS), Local Organizing Committee-Ghana Science Association (KNUST), Examination Officers Committee (CoS).Dr. Miezah is a member of the International Solid Waste Association (ISWA), he has been on their platform delivering conference papers and a member of the expert working group in waste value addition. He is also affiliated to Solid Waste Association of North America (SWANA) and Society of Petroleum Engineers (SPE). Kodwo is a Fellow of the Africa Research Impact Network (ARIN), Africa Environmental Sanitation Consult (AfES Consult) and International Earth Conservation (IEC).
