Faculty Biography

Prof. Clement Osei Akoto is a distinguished Ghanaian scientist with extensive academic and industrial expertise in medicinal chemistry and drug discovery. He obtained his Bachelor of Science degree in Chemistry from the Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology (KNUST), Ghana, graduating with First Class Honours. He pursued his postgraduate studies in North America, earning an MSc in Chemistry from the University of Alberta, Canada, and subsequently a Ph.D. in Medicinal Chemistry from the University of Utah, USA.In addition, he received a Distinction Certification in Drug Discovery, Development, and Commercialization from the University of California, San Diego, which further consolidated his expertise in pharmaceutical research, innovation, and translation.Prof. Osei Akoto has accumulated nearly a decade of experience in the pharmaceutical industry in North America, where he served as a Senior Research Scientist in several research-driven pharmaceutical organizations. His work encompassed a broad spectrum of scientific and technical activities in drug design, discovery, and development, combining academic rigor with applied research.His industrial career provided opportunities for supervising, mentoring, and training doctoral and post-doctoral researchers, fostering capacity building and contributing to the professional development of emerging scientists. He has also presented his research at numerous international and national scientific conferences, engaging with the broader scientific community and contributing to global discourse in medicinal chemistry.Prof. Osei Akoto’s multidisciplinary research interests integrate Total Organic and Bioorganic Synthesis, Medicinal and Pharmaceutical Chemistry, Organometallic Chemistry, Protein–Peptide–Amino Acid Chemistry, Carbohydrate Chemistry, Reaction Development and Methodology, Phytochemistry, and Spectroscopy.His research group’s overarching goal is the design, synthesis, and characterization of biologically active compounds targeting infectious diseases, cancer, and neurodegenerative disorders. He is particularly skilled in the rational design of drug-like molecules, natural product extraction and characterization, and the integration of synthetic and analytical chemistry approaches for the development of novel therapeutic agents.Prof. Osei Akoto’s laboratory is well-equipped to conduct structure-activity relationship (SAR) studies, compound optimization, and molecular characterization, bridging fundamental chemistry with pharmaceutical applications.Throughout his academic and professional journey, Prof. Osei Akoto has been recognized for his outstanding scholarly performance and research excellence. Among his numerous distinctions are:Ghana Government Merit Award (Highest GPA Award) – KNUST, 1997–1999 academic years.Dow Chemical Merit Award (Highest GPA Award) – University of Utah, USA, 2004–2005.Pfizer Global Research and Development Fellowship Award – recognizing diversity and innovation in organic and medicinal chemistry, University of Utah, USA, 2007–2008.He has also been recognized locally for his exceptional scholarly productivity, receiving the “Author with the Highest Number of Abstracts” Joint Award at the 8th Ghana Science Association (GSA) Conference (KNUST, May 2019), where he submitted twenty-one abstracts. Under his supervision, his students won six out of ten poster awards, including the top two awards, at the same conference—demonstrating his commitment to research mentorship and academic excellence.Prof. Osei Akoto has successfully synthesized and characterized several potent and bioactive compounds with promising therapeutic and biological activity. These include:Korormicin and its derivatives, exhibiting inhibitory activity against Gram-negative bacteria.Adriatoxin subunits, with cytotoxic effects against human cancer cell lines.Quinazolinone derivatives, serving as inhibitors of poly(ADP-ribose) polymerase (PARP-1), an important enzyme in DNA repair processes.Phenyl-indeno-pyrimidine derivatives, identified as adenosine A2A/A1 receptor antagonists with potential application in the treatment of Parkinson’s disease.His expertise extends to the design, synthesis, extraction, purification, and structural elucidation of drug-like molecules derived from both natural and synthetic sources, applicable across medicinal, biochemical, petrochemical, agrochemical, and pharmaceutical domains. His ongoing work contributes to advancing drug discovery platforms in Ghana and globally.Prof. Osei Akoto welcomes collaborations, partnerships, and mentorship engagements in areas spanning drug discovery, medicinal chemistry, natural product chemistry, and applied pharmaceutical research.
