Research Overview & Focus

This overarching research focus encompasses advancements in integrating innovative technologies and design approaches across various domains, including urban green spaces, sustainable building practices, education, public spaces, customer service, engineering education, complex systems, sustainability in higher education, dementia research, construction project management, smart cities, and more. The goal is to enhance sustainable urban living through creative solutions that address challenges in physical sciences while fostering innovative designs that are both educational and impactful on societal well-being.

Faculty Biography

Professor Alexander Boakye Marful is an Architect and Infrastructure Planner with over 20 years of professional experience. He completed his PhD at the University of Stuttgart, Germany, in Energy Efficient City Planning. Before the PhD, he graduated from the Master of Infrastructure Planning course at the same University where he obtained extra insight into the integrated and regional planning. He is currently an Associate Professor at the Department of Architecture of the Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology, Kumasi-Ghana. During and after his PhD education in Germany, he worked as an Architect and Infrastructure Planning Consultant for Fichtner GmbH & Co. KG, Germany where he responsible for project development, master planning, analysis and management of large Solar Power Plants being financed by the World Bank, European Union and other reputable financial institutions. In addition, he has received through various master-planning projects, knowledge in communities’ systems and development in the areas of urbanism principles, context evaluation, regeneration strategies, and environmental & social impact assessment. He has working experience in Ghana, Germany, Kuwait, Uganda, Sudan, Malawi, South Africa and USA.In addition to the foregoing, Alexander has constantly been engaged with industry serving as the Consultant to SPAYSIS LTD and ASSOCIATED CONSULTANTS. In Ghana, he has and consults as an Architect and Infrastructure Planner for a number of impactful projects including: Transaction Advisory Services for the Development of Sekondi-Takoradi Integrated Markets and Transport Infrastructure Projects (STIMTIP) under Public Private Partnership (PPP) for Sekondi-Takoradi Metropolitan Assembly (STMA); and the Project Lead, Infrastructure Planner and Concept Initiator for Ghana Smart Sustainable Development Goals (SDG) Cities Programme being implemented in 10 Cities. Alexander is currently a Co-Principal Investigator for the – TRANS-SAHARA Project -Novel WEFE Nexus-based approaches towards agroforestry management in the Greater North African Region which Commenced November 2024 till November 2027. He has also served as the Chair of panel of Accessors for Accreditation of Architectural Related Programmes at about three of the Technical Universities for Ghana Tertiary Education Commission (GTEC) as well as Secretary to Professional Practice Examination Committee of the Ghana Institute of Architects (GIA) since 2020. He is a member of the Council of the Ghana Institute of Architects and the Education Committee of the Architects Registration Council since 2020. As an Associate Professor at the Department of Architecture he has special interest in Resilient and Energy Efficient Community Planning and Development; Universal (Barrier-free) Design; Eco-Mobility Management and Smart Neighborhoods; Digital Fabrication for Afro-Green Communities; Tactical Urbanism and Community Living Labs; Design Thinking and Frugal Innovation for Developing. He is a Member of American Planning Association (APA); Ghana Institute of Architects (GIA); African Good Governance Network (AGGN) and of International Society of City and Regional Planners (ISOCARP).
