Francis Somiah-Kwaw Aitpillah
The researcher has conducted extensive global cancer research, focusing on the genetic, epigenomic, and clinical aspects of breast and gastrointestinal cancers, with applications in oncology and public health.
Faculty Biography
Dr Aitpillah graduated from the University of Ghana in 1998. He completed his one year housemanship at the Komfo Anokye Teaching Hospital, Kumasi and an additional one month in cardiothoracic surgery at the Korle-Bu teaching Hospital, Accra, Ghana. He continued with his residency training at the Komfo Anokye Teaching Hospital and completed in 2006 with a fellowship of the West African College of Surgeons in General surgery. He has since practiced at the Komfo Anokye Teaching Hospital as a General Surgeon with a special interest in breast surgery. In 2008, Dr. Aitpillah joined the Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology as a lecturer in Surgery. He is also a part time lecturer in human gross anatomy for undergraduate medical students and MPhil Anatomy students. He did 2 months secondment in Oncoplastic Breast Surgery in Dusseldorf, Germany in 2010. Dr. Aitpillah’s clinical and academic interests are in the fields of breast and thyroid cancers.Dr. Aitpillah has been a member of the University Michigan/KATH and now HFHS/KATH collaboration from its inception. He is a pioneering member in the training and performing of Core Needle Biopsies at the Komfo Anokye Teaching Hospital. He has since trained many surgical residents in performing core needle biopsies.Dr. Aitpillah is the Head of General Surgery Unit at the Komfo Anokye Teaching Hospital. He is also the Postgraduate Training Coordinator for Surgery at the Komfo Anokye Teaching Hospital. He is an examiner with West Africa College of Surgeons and the Ghana College of Surgeons. He holds a certificate in hospital administration and he is a member of the International Institute of Scientist. Dr Aitpillah is a 2013 University of Michigan African Presidential Scholar.
