About

Vivian is a Senior Lecturer at the Department of Child Health, Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology (KNUST), Kumasi, Ghana and a Senior Specialist Paediatrician working at the Komfo Anokye Teaching Hospital (KATH) in Kumasi. She holds a Bachelor of Medicine and Surgery (MB ChB) from the School of Medical Sciences, KNUST. She is a Fellow of the West Africa College of Physician(WACP paeds) and the Ghana College of Physicians and Surgeons. she also holds a certificate in paediatric oncology from South Africa- African Paediatric Fellowship Programme. Her work involves teaching and clinical care of paediatric cancer patients and others with haematological problems especially sickle cell disease at KATH which is a tertiary referral centre in Ghana. KATH is one of the two treatment centres in the country for childhood cancers. Komfo Anokye Teaching Hospital has a large cohort of sickle cell disease patients with a newborn screening programme in place and patients in the clinic are mostly from this newborn cohort.she is involved a lot of advocacy through talks on radio, television and churches to promote the early detection of childhood cancers and also on sickle cell diseaseOver the last Fifteen years, she has gained extensive experience in undergraduate and postgraduate teaching and in research in Ghana. She is currently heading the paediatric haem/oncology unit. She is involved in various researches, initially with the SCD newborn screening project and the Organ Damage in Sickle Cell Disease Study (ORDISS) project. She was the co-PI for Sickle Pan African Research Consortium (SPARCO) I for the Ghana site and involved in the Sickle Cell Disease Genomics of Africa (SickleGen Africa) project. She is also involved in various ongoing clinical trials at KATH. She is the PI for the SIOP Wilms Tumour Africa Project at the Kumasi Site and part of the CANCaRe Africa consortium for paediatric oncology research.

Research Summary

(inferred from publications by AI)

The researcher has conducted extensive research focusing on two primary themes: renal and related cancers, and hemoglobinopathies. In renal and related cancers, studies highlight advancements in Wilms tumour treatment, the surgical aspects of nephrectomy, improved survival rates in African populations, and adaptive treatment guidelines for local circumstances. These findings underscore the need for tailored care strategies to optimize patient outcomes. In the context of hemoglobinopathies, research delves into the management of sickle cell disease, utilizing standardized methodologies such as multi-country surveys and qualitative insights. Additionally, studies examine the role of heme oxygenase-1 in pediatric patients with sickle cell disease, emphasizing its significance in assessing kidney function. These discoveries highlight the importance of understanding systemic health issues to enhance patient care outcomes and improve quality of life for affected individuals.
